2019 US Open Update: Day 2, Round 1 (Men’s Singles)

2019 US Open Update:

— At closing time of tonight’s Prime Time overtime smack down by Nick and his big serving stick, “Stevie” Johnson looked a lot like Sgt. O’Neill in Platoon after being told by Barnes that he had to go back out on patrol … crestfallen and perturbed
— Other than the near miss by Cecchinato, Day 2 was a major Italian Job, with straight setters for Berrettini and favorite son Sonego, and a truly fabulous conquest of this year’s French Open finalist/runner up by Fabbiano.
— Isner isn’t above some impressive grandstanding in the Grandstand.
— Great tennis from Tennys, who outlasts Tsonga in five on Court 5.
— German sports fan hasn’t partied like this since the last World Cup, with Sasha squeezing by Albot, Struff stuffing Ruud, and Filip stubbing his toes against Marcel-Stebe.
— Little Big Man Diego whips out his mobile speed pass in blowing by Robin Haase.
— A really ripe Paire sure looked self-assured against Schnur.
— Slovenia socks it to Slovakia when Bedene cleans Kovalik’s clock.
— Humbert can’t cope with Copil, and Khachanov can’t foot the lovely bill against Pospisil.
— Ivo with the evil good serve fails to make the curve against Tiafoe.
— Shapavalov flattens fellow Maple Leafer Felix.
— Egor turns Court 13 into Gerasimov Park.
