University of Georgia sprinter Elijah Godwin was accidentally impaled by a javelin during a track meeting.
University police stated the 19-year-old Godwin was running backward during a drill on the infield when he backed into a javelin that was sticking out of the ground.
The javelin entered his body just below his shoulder blade. A portion of it had to be cut off before Godwin could be transported to the hospital, where doctors removed the remainder of the javelin from his body.
Ginger Luby, Godwin’s mother, advised police her son — a freshman student-athlete at the school — suffered a punctured and collapsed lung. However, Godwin is expected to make a full recovery.
