Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday as the school announced it is investigating Courtney Smith’s claims that several people close to the coach knew of a 2015 allegation of domestic violence against her ex-husband, former assistant football coach Zach Smith, who was fired in July.
Rece Davis of ESPN has surmised that the school is negotiating a buyout of Meyer. Smith told college football reporter Brett McMurphy that the violence her husband was accused of was not a secret. “All the wives knew,” Smith said, “They all did. Every single one.”
Meyer denied knowing about the abuse as recently as July 25th saying, “I was never told about anything.” Smith said she told Meyer’s wife Shelley but did not know if Shelley Meyer ever told her hall of fame husband. “Shelley said she was going to have to tell Urban,” said. “I said: ‘That’s fine, you should tell Urban.”
