Todd Jones has his share of secret recipes. But, with a name like “The Donutologist”, it’s no secret where his passion lies.
Tell us about Sweet Dreams and Cuzins Duzin.
Cuzin’s Duzin is a Hot Fresh Mini Donut company I started 24 years ago. I’ve been curating donuts for over 44 years. If you cut me, glaze will come out of my skin!! Lol!!! Sweet Dreams is our catering company where we bring the Donut Experience to you. As opposed to Cuzin’s Duzin, the retail shop where you go to the Donut Experience.
What are you currently working on?
We are currently working on our second location and very soon to be third location by the end of 2018. We will eventually franchise the concept to women entrepreneurs. Why Women you might ask? Because for one, women are smart. Two, they are the largest segment of the population who are starting businesses in record numbers. My Goal is to sell 2,000 franchises each doing a $500,000 each, which would create a billion-dollar global company by the year 2024 or sooner.
Why do you do what you do?
I do what I do because I enjoy putting a smile on peoples faces when they taste my donuts. It gives me a sense of Purpose and Satisfaction.
What was your “ah-ha!” moment…when you knew this is what you wanted to do?
My Aha moment came when I felt like this wasn’t work to me. I would do this if I wasn’t getting paid to do it. I really look forward to making donuts everyday. There’s no retiring for me. Jay Z said everyone has a “Genius Level Talent” and this is mine.
Who/what inspires you?
Folk like Reginald Lewis from Beatrice Foods (1st Black Billionaire), Robert Johnson (BET), Oprah Winfrey, Ray Kroc (McDonalds) all inspire me.
What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of being a black entrepreneur?
The most rewarding thing about being a black entrepreneur is being the evidence of what can happen if you #DonutStop and stay Focused no matter what challenges or obstacles are put before you.
Are any of your creations your favorite or do you love them all equally like children?
My favorite creations are my “Donuts For Grownups” Brand. Those Henny Donuts are Everything!!
If you could have a business lunch with any 3 people (dead or alive), who would they be?
My top 3 people would be Reginald Lewis, AG Gaston (he helped fund the Civil Rights Movement) and Mansa Musa (the Richest Man that ever lived).
What is your advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
My advice to other entrepreneurs would be Live your Dream Awake, #DonutStop, and discover your Genius Level Talent because that will make a luxurious life for you.
We started this Defy Life movement for those of us who live outside the box and defy how conventional thinking tells us we should live. How do you Defy Life?
I Defy Life by putting GOD in Everything I think, feel and do!!
