Pharrell Williams & Forest Whitaker have teamed up to bring a biopic of iconic female MC Roxanne Shanté .
As a member of the legendary Juice Crew, Roxanne Shanté rhymed next to Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Marley Marl, Kool G Rap and Masta Ace, and other pioneers in the game.
At just 14-years-old, the Queens-born MC released “Roxanne’s Revenge”, a response to U.T.F.O.’s “Roxanne Roxanne”, and was immediately thrust into the music spotlight. She quickly became one of Hip Hop’s first popular female rappers.
Now, Pharrell Williams and Forest Whitaker — with Netflix — have produced a biopic focused on her life. Appropriately titled Roxanne Roxanne, the film is expected to drop March 23.
The movie stars Detroit native Chanté Adams in the title role, as well as Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali, Nia Long, Kevin Phillips, Elvis Nolasco and Shenell Edmonds.
Prior to the film’s release, Netflix has made available the official trailer, which gives some insight into the rough childhood Shanté endured. Check it out!
