Baker Mayfield is the first player in the history of the Heisman Trophy era to win the award after coming into college as a walk-on.
“This is unbelievable for me, being up here among these greats,” Mayfield said after winning the award, “It’s something that words can’t even describe. God has put me in this position that I’m so blessed, and a lot of times I wonder why. But it’s such an honor to be up here. It’s unbelievable.”
Walterfootball.com is still projecting him as the 5th best quarterback in the upcoming draft behind Josh Rosen, UCLA, Lamar Jackson, Louisville, Sam Darnold, USC, and Josh Allen, Wyoming. Mel Kiper of ESPN has Mayfield ranked 4th with Jackson of Louisville not even making the top 5 and Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State coming in at 5.
Mayfield completed 71 percent of his passes and thrown for 4,340 yards and 41 touchdowns with five interceptions during his Heisman winning season.
