During a performance at #NYFW, Nicki Minaj called out the fashion industry for blatant cultural appropriation.
Nicki Minaj has never been one to bite her tongue. Earlier this week, the entertainment & fashion icon took aim directly at the fashion industry for its marginalization of people of color while gaining influence from their cultures.
Nicki performed live at the Philipp Plein Spring / Summer 2018 runway show during New York Fashion Week, along with 21 Savage, Yo Gotti, Future and Teyana Taylor. While she acknowledged her gratitude to designer Philipp Plein, Minaj also made it a point to state that she believes diversity is often rarely embraced in the world of fashion.
“Thank you for including our culture,” she said to huge applause from the crowd. “Designers get really big, really rich off of our culture, and then you don’t see a motherfucker that look anything like us in the front row half the time. So let’s make some noise for Philipp Plein tonight.”
Hear her comments in the final minute of the below video.
Plein, from Germany, also posted a video on Instagram featuring Minaj, Taylor, Swae Lee from Rae Sremmurd, Savage and many more performing on the runway as the crowd went wild.
The audience included many other major names in Hip Hop, such as 50 Cent and Fabolous.
