Competing with NFL opening weekend, and 2 category 4 hurricanes, IT still managed to do big numbers beating the studio estimates of $117M. The previous record for a September release was $48M for the movie Hotel Transylvania 2 in 2015 and the biggest opening weekend banked by a horror or supernatural film — Paranormal Activity 3 which earned $52.6 million in 2011.
