Serena Williams gave birth to a 6-pound, 13-ounce baby girl on Friday.
Per ESPN, Serena Williams has had her baby!
Just before her U.S. Open match, big sister Venus Williams was asked about becoming a new aunt.
“Obviously I’m super excited. Words can’t describe,” Venus told ESPN.
In April, Serena announced she was pregnant via Shapchat with the caption “20 weeks”, later confirming that she and fiancé Alexis Ohanian were expecting their first child.
She found out she was pregnant just a few days before the Australian Open started. She would go on to defeat Venus in the final for her 23rd Grand Slam title.
As you would expect from Serena, she is adamant she’ll resume playing after having the baby.
Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, stated in a recent interview that the plan is for Williams, barring complications, to start training as early as November.
“The goal is to be ready for the Australian Open and then we’ll see,” said Mouratoglou, of Williams’ desire to defend her title. “If she’s ready, she’ll compete. If not, we’ll delay the comeback. I don’t think she should compete if she’s not really ready.”
