Beyonce reportedly wants to buy a stake in her hometown Houston Rockets.
According to a report from Bloomberg, music megastar and Houston native, Beyonce, is interested in purchasing a stake in the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
The Rockets revealed, in July, that owner Leslie Alexander was selling the team. Alexander bought the Rockets in 1993 for $85 million.
NBA ownership is not foreign to Beyonce, as her husband, Jay-Z, was once a 1% stakeholder in the Brooklyn Nets. He sold his share to ex-NBA player Jason Kidd for $500,000 after he founded Roc Nation, an agency that represents professional athletes.
Beyonce is worth $350 million, per Forbes, and is 46th on the list of richest women in the U.S. Jay-Z’s listed worth is $810 million according to Forbes.
The Rockets are the eighth-ranked franchise in Forbes’ most valuable NBA teams, at $1.65 billion. The organization $244 million last season. The price to buy the Rockets may be similar to the $2 billion that Steve Ballmer paid to buy the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014.
“We’re going to make sure that it is the right buyer,” Rockets CEO Tad Brown stated at the time of the announcement of the team being for sale. “Leslie has the latitude of time based on our resources and his resources and everything associated with the team right now.”
During this off-season, the Rockets have traded for point guard Chris Paul from the Clippers and signed All-Star guard James Harden to an extension — the most lucrative contract in the NBA. The new contract increases Harden’s salary to at total of $228 million through the 2022-2023 season.
