Empowered free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains a top-seller among NFL jerseys.
Colin Kaepernick, who is still not-so-mysteriously off of an NFL roster, had the 17th most popular jersey during the month of May, per the NFL Shop’s list of highest-selling jerseys.
Kaepernick’s jersey of his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, were more than jersey sales for Super Bowl quarterbacks Matt Ryan, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson, to name a few. Marshawn Lynch and Tom Brady had the highest-selling jerseys for the month.
The sales highlight the contrast between Kaepernick’s popularity among general fans versus that of NFL organizations— since Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem last season to stand up for racial and class injustice in the US. At its peak, the in-season controversy saw Kaepernick have the fifth-best selling jersey in the league.
Kaepernick, a free agent after opting out of the final year of his contract in March, had a recent visit with the Seattle Seahawks. However, the organization decided to make Austin Davis one of its backups instead.
