Big Baller Brand let a golden opportunity slip through the cracks in its first public appearance since releasing its initial sneaker.
Have you seen LeBron wearing Adidas lately? How about Steph Curry rocking Nike kicks? Those would both be a very profound “NO!!!!”. Those guys, and others, wouldn’t be caught dead in a rival’s gear. Not only is it a contractual violation. It would be a major faux pas in the ever-raging and fierce sneaker wars!
Apparently LaVar and Lonzo Ball haven’t gotten the game plan on this one.
At this Saturday’s Ballislife All-American Game at Long Beach City College, photographer Cassy Athena snapped a photo of the Ball family. LaVar, Lonzo and LaMelo are each sitting courtside. Immediately, many pointed out that despite releasing Lonzo’s ZO2 Big Baller Brand signature sneaker just a week ago, Lonzo and LaMelo were rocking Jordan Retros, while LaVar had on the Adidas Energy Boost 3.
This seems like a rookie mistake that can strike a death-blow to a fledgling brand. Best believe that the big boys — Nike, Adidas and Under Armour — will be waiting for every opportunity to pounce on Big Baller Brand. This opens the door for those, and other companies, to take viable shots at its competition. If Big Baller Brand wants to maximize on the release of its first sneaker, why wouldn’t they make it absolutely necessary that they have their own product to wear before the release?
Couple of things here. First off, there are likely only a few ZO2 prototypes in already produced, as the pre-orders being placed aren’t expected to ship until November. Also, no matter what happens with Big Baller Brand moving forward, younger brothers LiAngelo and LaMelo will be wearing Under Armour when they attend UCLA in the future. .
However, following a week of being praised for his marketing strategy, LaVar not having a few pairs of ZO2s ready to roll for the family’s first public appearance post-release feels like a glaring missed opportunity. While the Balls were all decked out in Big Baller Brand apparel, we all know it’s going to be the sneakers that make the statement moving forward. After weeks of outlandish statements and claims, the world is watching every move the Balls make.
