Takkarist McKinley is one of the more polarizing EDGE prospects on the 2017 draft class.
School: UCLA Ht: 6-2 Wt: 260
McKinley is an insanely relentless defender. He rarely, if ever, takes a snap off. He’s fast and explosive in all aspects, firing out of his stance and flying around the field. Able to rush the passer from both two and three point stance. His long arms are ideal for maintaining leverage and setting the edge.
Solid versus the run. Sets the edge play side and runs down plays from the backside. He’s an abundantly strong tackler, evidenced by his ability to bring down ball carriers with ease by himself. Also finds the football well in the run game.
Technique is seemingly foreign to McKinley. He gets by on sheer hustle and burst currently. Rarely uses his hands as a pass rusher and when he does, his hands and feet do not work in unison. Has tight hips and limited ankle flexion, a generally fatal flaw in pass rushers. He plays with too high a pad level and doesn’t show the ability to bend and flatten his route to the quarterback. Doesn’t possess a go-to pass rush move, therefore has little counters to offer.
Whatever word is below raw, that’s what McKinley is at this point. Some of his flaws are correctable with coaching and experience, but the lack of fluidity is a huge question mark. He’s an ideal fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker and there will be coaches that believe they can get the most out of him. Has declared that he will run in the 4.4 range at the combine. Due to his physical attributes and hustle-hard mentality, he has a chance to be a productive pro.
