Strengths

Jones is an above average athlete and shows and elite burst to the ball carrier. His closing speed and pursuit angles are precise and decisive. Shows excellent eye discipline when diagnosing the run game. Wraps up well and secures solo tackles.

As a pass-rusher, Jones is extremely active, but raw. He was generally the best athlete on the field in every game he played and beat blocker off sheer athleticism. He has quick hands and an explosive first step. Closes to the quarterback quickly and arrives with bad intentions. Jones is a hard-working leader…one of the hardest working players in the Jackson State  program.

Weaknesses

Javancy Jones was a man among boys in most games throughout his collegiate career. His speed and explosion allowed him to get by on athleticism in some cases. He does the ability to bend and get to the quarterback, however, his hand usage must improve. Jones would benefit from the added strength and bulk an NFL training regimen will provide.

2017 NFL Draft Positional Rankings

Overall

Jones will be transitioning to an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, ideally. With that, he’ll have to show that he’s adept in coverage and comfortable moving backwards and in space. Also, coming from a small school, he must adjust to the speed of the NFL game. Bottom line is that Jones has the tools to be the next in a long line of disruptive pass rushers from HBCU schools.
