  • O.J. Howard could be much better in the NFL than he was at Alabama.

Strengths

Howard has prototypical size for the tight end position. He’s a fluid athlete and transitions smoothly when changing directions. He has a good understanding of route running and gains separation in coverage. With his speed and athleticism, Howard consistently shows the ability to run away from defenders with the ball in his hands.

Howard is a natural hands catcher who plucks the ball with ease. Being that he was not featured in the Alabama passing game, he has improved as a blocker.

Weaknesses

As a receiver, Howard can improve on his ability to find holes in zones. As he becomes more seasoned as a route-runner, he should improve. He is not a dominant blocker. He’s more of a pesky, wall-off blocker, but he’s effective. He has the ability to grow in that department. Added strength and bulk will benefit him as his body matures.

2017 NFL Draft Positional Rankings

Overall

O.J. Howard is a big, smooth athlete who shows signs of being an above average all-around tight end. In today’s modern college offenses, there are very few tight ends that are as well rounded as Howard. His skill set will allow for him to be an early contributor for the team that drafts him. Howard is the consensus number one tight end in this draft class.
